Saudi regime increases troops in Qatif

Saudi authorities have deployed more troops to the city of Qatif in the Eastern Province to help crack down on anti-regime demonstrators, Press TV reports.

Saudi troops were deployed to Qatif on Tuesday amid demonstrations in the city and other towns in the province, including Awamiyah and Safwa.

Over the past several days, Saudi security forces have killed five protesters and injured many others in the Eastern Province. The funerals for the victims have usually turned to demonstrations with protesters chanting slogans against the Al Saud regime.

Saudi demonstrators criticize “systematic discrimination” in the kingdom, saying they are targeted for demanding more freedom and equality.

On March 5, Saudi authorities banned public gatherings after demonstrations were held in the Eastern Province, demanding the release of political prisoners.

Human Rights Watch called on Saudi authorities in October to stop “arbitrary arrests of peaceful protesters, relatives of wanted persons, and human rights activists” in the Eastern Province.
