67 killed in Darra mosque bombing

* More than 100 injured as suicide blast rips through crowded mosque in Akhurwall village during Friday prayers

* 11 children among dead g TTP denies involvement

PESHAWAR: At least 67 worshipers were killed and more than 100 injured in a suicide attack in a crowded mosque in Darra Adam Khel on Friday, officials said.

Kohat District Coordination Officer (DCO) Shahid Ullah told Daily Times that at least 67 worshipers including woman and 11 children had been killed and over 100 injured in the suicide attack. He said that the blast took place at a time when people were offering Friday prayers in Jamia Masjid at Akhurwall village of Darra Adam Khel.

However, Kohat Commissioner Khalid Khan Umarzai confirmed 45 deaths and 80 injured in the attack.

Some 300 people had gathered just after prayers when the bomber walked into the Waali Mosque’s main hall and detonated himself, according to witnesses.

“I had just finished the prayers when there was a big explosion. It was very terrifying. I don’t know what happened later. I just fell down,” 15-year-old Mohib Ullah said. Mohib said guards at the mosque gates tried to stop the bomber, but he managed to get in. “The blast tossed me up, then I fell down,” Mohammad Usman, 32, a schoolteacher with wounds on his head and arms said from his hospital bed in Peshawar. “Later, it was just like a graveyard.”

A local official said 11 children were among the dead and an AFP reporter said the force of the explosion reduced the mosque to a pile of rubble.

The Kohat DCO said the mosque may have been targeted because local tribesmen running an anti-Taliban lashkar have often met there, though not on this particular Friday.

Although the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, through its spokesman, denied responsibility for the attack, a local elder blamed the militia and suggested it could have been acting to avenge a pro-government militia set up to thwart the terrorists.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Iftikhar Hussain, during his visit to the Lady Reading Hospital, told journalists that terrorist attacks would continue in Pakistan and Afghanistan until complete intelligence sharing between Pakistan, NATO forces and Afghanistan. He said the time had come for NATO forces and the Afghan government to take effective operations against the Taliban in Afghanistan, adding that the war on terror would continue until every last terrorist in the country was eliminated. akhtar amin/agencies

TTP blames US Blackwater for Darra mosque blast
Staff Reporter

Peshawar—Former spokesman of the banned Tehrek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Azam Tariq has denied involvement of his organization in the attack on a Mosque in Dara Adamkhel and alleged that US and Blackwater were responsible for the dastardly act in which many innocent worshippers were perished and sustained injuries. Azam Tariq, who hailed from Dara Adamkhel, in telephones to news agencies from an undisclosed location, denied that the blast was the handiwork of any Pakistani militant group or the banned TTP.

“It is the work of Blackwater,” Tariq said in reference to the US security firm renamed Xe. Azam Tariq was active in Dara Adamkhel, his native town but was forced to flee the area after military operation and was presently hiding in Taliban sanctuary in Upper Orakzai and working under the direct command of Chief of TTP Hakimullah Mehsud, the successor of Baithullah Mehsud.

TTP’s second in Command Wali-ur-Rehman Mehsud said that Blackwater was behind most of the incidents wherein innocents were targeted. “Blackwater is doing its job of destabilizing Pakistan by targeting Masajids and killing innocent people and putting the blame on the shoulder of Taliban.” Wali also blamed media for its partial behavior. “Most of the calls of responsibility of the attacks were fake,” Wali said. He said through fake calls, Taliban were held responsible for certain attacks which have nothing to do with the objective of Taliban. Wali also urged the media to cover both sides of the incidents and shun its biased policy towards TTP. Elders of Dara Adamkheil said that residents of the area where the blast occurred were pro-government and participated in the military operation against the militants and they suspect Taliban hand in the attack. Defence and security analyst Brig Rtd Mehmood Shah speaking to a private TV channel said that as security forces were conducting search operations in Upper Orakzai against the militants, retaliatory attacks cannot be ruled out.. Shah also said that Azam Tariq might be behind the coward attack. The United States has condemned the two terror attacks on mosques in Darra Adamkhel and Peshawar on Friday, adding that US will continue to work with the government of Pakistan to combat violent extremism and terrorism.
